The meetings, which were attended by the Directors General of the 184 Member Customs administrations of WCO Council, assessed the work carried out by the WCO Members and the Secretariat since the last Council session in June 2021. Beside deliberating and deciding on a range of articulated themes such as; recommended practices in the security and facilitation of supply chain in global trade, members also focused their discussions on technical areas such as Capacity Building, Rules of Origin, Valuation, Nomenclature and Classification, Compliance and Trade Facilitation, as well as other important governance and integrity matters.
The Council noted the update on the implementation of the WCO Action Plan, and endorsed the WCO Strategic Plan 2022-2025. The Council correspondingly expressed its support for the WCO’s Green Customs Initiative as a cornerstone of the WCO Strategic Plan for Customs modernization, recognizing the urgent need for Customs to play an active role in addressing environmental concerns and adapt to fragile contexts at borderlands in a post-pandemic environment.
At the conclusion of the Sessions, the Director General of Jordan Customs Department was re-elected Vice-Chair of the WCO Council and the WCO regional representative for the North of Africa, Near and Middle East (MENA) region, in recognition to the leading role JCD plays at the regional and international levels.
The WCO regional representation office, which JCD currently holds for the third consecutive year, carries out multiple responsibilities and reviews the regional capacity building status in addition to facilitating information exchange, communications and coordination between regional member customs administrations and the WCO.
